Melanocortin receptor agonist peptide
Bremelanotide (PT-141)
Also called PT-141. A specific US prescription product is approved for a narrow indication, while generic research material is not equivalent to that product.
Why it is discussed
A narrow US-approved sexual-desire indication
Bremelanotide is discussed for sexual-desire and sexual-performance claims. In the United States, Vyleesi is approved only for a defined population and indication; its label states that it is not indicated to enhance sexual performance. That product-specific authorization does not transfer to generic PT-141 powder or differently manufactured products.
What it is
A cyclic peptide acting on melanocortin receptors.
Bremelanotide, also called PT-141, is a synthetic cyclic peptide. Cyclic describes its ring-like molecular structure. It activates several melanocortin receptor subtypes, a receptor family involved in functions including pigmentation and central nervous-system signaling.
How it works
Receptor activity is known; the full clinical mechanism is not.
Bremelanotide has activity at MC1 and MC4 receptors, among other melanocortin targets. MC4 receptors are expressed in the brain, while MC1 receptors are involved in pigmentation. These different targets help explain why a compound discussed for sexual desire can also have effects unrelated to that outcome.
The authorized product's labeling explicitly states that the mechanism by which it improves hypoactive sexual desire disorder is unknown. It should therefore not be described as a fully explained or universal libido switch.
Trials in a defined population do not establish sexual-performance enhancement for everyone. Receptor activation also does not establish that a generic PT-141 powder matches the studied product's composition, absorption, benefits, or risks.
Scientific / evidence sources
Evidence at a glance
What is established—and what is not.
Product-specific US regulatory review and human trials
Regulatory review and controlled clinical evidence support the specific FDA-approved Vyleesi product for a narrow indication and population.
That evidence does not establish sexual-performance enhancement, use in other populations, generic PT-141 powder equivalence, or the quality of products outside the approved supply chain.
Regulatory status
Canada and the United States are checked separately.
No Health Canada-authorized bremelanotide product was identified in the current Drug Product Database review. Verify the live database before relying on this status.
Vyleesi is FDA approved for acquired, generalized hypoactive sexual desire disorder in certain premenopausal women. Approval applies to that product and label—not to generic PT-141 powder or products sold for other purposes.
Regulatory status describes product authorization and relevant regulatory context. It is not a complete legal opinion about possession, importation, prescribing, sale, or professional practice.
